This 48-hour programme is designed to equip art practitioners with key concepts and principles of early childhood education that are necessary for effective teaching and good practices for the art curriculum in a socially diverse classroom.
The method of delivery and science behind learning will be the central guiding principles in this course. Participants will gain an overview of the theories in child development as well as the pedagogical approaches suitable for effective and more inclusive learning in young children of different demographics. Teaching is student-centered and the educator’s role is to provide direct instruction in consciously skilled ways and to structure problem tasks, guide children’s understanding, and promote collaborative behaviours.
1. Child Development 4-6 (Online)
This online module focuses on the development of young children, ages 4-6 in the major areas of functioning including cognitive, communication, creative, physical, social and emotional development. Trainees will also be introduced to the key theories in child development to facilitate their understanding of how children develop and learn. Upon the completion of this module, trainees will be able to identify the milestones and emerging skills in children’s development and their implications for teaching practice.
2. Teaching and Pedagogical Approaches in Early Childhood Art Education
This module focuses on effective engagement strategies for children from 4 to 6 years of age. Children develop and learn in many ways; hence, the strategies that best support them vary too. Upon the completion of this module, trainees will have acquired several effective engagement strategies and common activities for supporting children’s learning.
3. Lesson Design and Delivery for Performing Arts & Visual Arts Curriculum
This module introduces trainees to the components in lesson planning and the importance in planning developmentally and culturally appropriate art activities for children from age 4 to 6. Upon completion of the module, trainees will have gained a better understanding of the key components of lesson planning and acquired some skills in planning developmentally appropriate art activities for children from age 4 to 6 years of age.
4. Designing Art Programmes for Socially Diverse Classrooms
This module introduces the trainees to the importance of the learning environment on children’s behaviours and learning. A learning environment that is interesting, well organized with a variety of choices of materials stimulate children’s thinking and facilitate their learning. Upon completion of the module, trainees will acquire basic skills and knowledge to create, organize and select appropriate resources and materials to facilitate children’s learning of the arts.
5. Holistic Evaluation in Arts Education
This module introduces the trainees to the importance of assessment and evaluation in helping educators make informed decisions about children’s learning and instruction. Upon completion of the module, trainees will acquire basic skills and knowledge in strategies for authentic assessment of children’s learning and key considerations in the evaluation of activities implemented in the early childhood classroom.
6. Managing Challenging Behaviours (Online)
This online module provides trainees with strategies for managing children’s behaviour within a classroom setting. It includes the use of specific communication strategies, planning of the space, time and resources in the environment and the setting of rules and limits to as ways to manage and facilitate effective learning in a preschool environment. This module is a supplementary topic to Designing Art Programmes for Socially Diverse Classrooms.
7. Integrating the Arts into the NEL Early Childhood Curriculum
The modules introduce trainees to the Curriculum Framework for Kindergartens in Singapore. It also discusses the Curriculum Framework for Kindergartens in Singapore with the focus on integrating the arts into an early childhood curriculum and facilitates the translation of the principles and learning goals into practice. Upon completion of the module, trainees will have acquired the knowledge and skills in designing developmentally appropriate learning experiences to meet the learning goals in aesthetics and creative expressions.
This programme provides foundational pedagogical knowledge for art practitioners in early childhood education settings so as to carry out their roles and duties effectively within the context of a socially diverse classroom.
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

This programme comprises of 7 modules over 48 hours.
Revision & Redesign
The new programme serves to attend to the needs of art practitioners to deliver art programmes not only in a standard ECCE learning environment, but a diverse classroom with students of different learning abilities. The programme is designed to equip art practitioners to manage a classroom to deliver unbiased art programmes for all participating children.

All personel with experience in delivering Art Education programme in preschool setting/with art background will be an added advantage.
No prior experience in early childhood education required.
*Relevant art forms are included, but not limited to: Painting, Drawing, Calligraphy, Pottery, Ceramics, Printmaking, Fashion/textiles (noted that there are no specific qualifications for Batik), Photography, Multimedia design courses (includes gaming, animation, videography), Dance, Drama/Theatre, Music (instrumental/singing)

Applicants will be notified of their eligibility for the course 2 weeks after the course application deadline.
SIRS is not eligible for this course.
This course is eligible under the SkillsFuture Credit Scheme.
*After e2i Subsidy: $449.54 (inclusive of 7% GST) - for Singapore Citizens & Singapore Permanent Residents, who meet the following entry requirements:
- Only eligible for arts instructors in the NAC-AEP database (including Self-Employed Persons/Sole proprietor that has professional qualification (minimum of a diploma) in the relevant art form)
- Achieve 100% attendance of the programme and submit all coursework required
- No prior training experience in ECCE related programmes
- The participants and/or the Company shall not receive any other funding from government sources in respect of the e2i grant
- Secure at least 2 paid teaching assignments to preschoolers aged 4 to 6 years and earning at least $100 per assignment within 6 months upon completion of training, and provide SEED the Contract for Service or proof of income.
- All applications will be submitted to NAC for review AFTER our registration deadline.
Self-sponsored applicants who are NTUC members can claim up to 50% of unfunded course fees under the Union Training Assistance Programme (UTAP). Claims are capped at $250 per year, or up to $500 for NTUC members aged 40 years old and above. Prevailing terms & conditions apply.
